Hi there, David and Catriona here. This is our AWS hosted website to share our family photos.

Mostly we show our best bird photos - these have improved over the years, but are way, way short of what the pro- wildlife photographers can achieve. Still, we hope you enjoy the images as much as we did visiting the far flung national parks to see the people, birds and buildings with our own eyes (and lenses)

Check the menu on the left for our latest albums.
But in the meantime here is one of my favourite shots.

This is a Martial Eagle sitting on a tree stump just beside the road in Amboseli National Park. These eagles are the largest in Africa, but are normally only seen as distant specs. In this case, the bird was in an argument with a Tawny Eagle across the road, over who got first bites at a small dik-dik deer lying dead beside the road. The Tawny is a much smaller bird so there is little doubt who would win, but I guess we drove up the track and scared them off. Either way, both birds waited patiently with neither wanting to move too far away from the kill. Such a good photo opp!

Some background photography details:
  • I have stuck with Canon EOS throughout, most recently moving from EOS70D to mirrorless EOSR6 MkII,
  • The lens for birds is EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USMI
  • The camera settings are: RAW, almost exclusively in AV mode, centre focused, centre weighted exposure process, Auto ISO
  • My raw photo processing software Darktable 4 Scene Referred workflow using FilmicRGB
Happy photoshooting, and stay safe in 2024!
